Groups led by French utility giants EDF and GDF Suez are going head-to-head in the competition to win the two zones on offer in France's second-round offshore wind tender. The prize will be the chance to build a combined 1 gigawatt of capacity in the two areas — Le Treport in the English Channel and Noirmoutier off France's Atlantic coast — coming on line between 2021 and 2023. The government launched the second round in March after four zones with a combined 2 GW of capacity were awarded in the first-round tender launched in 2011 (WGI Jan.25'13). Le Treport also went on offer in the first round, but Paris rejected the sole bid from a GDF Suez-led consortium for being too high.
