European utilities started 2013 much the way they ended 2012 - in a gas-negative mood that helped push down European gas demand last year to its lowest since 1999. Owners of gas-fired power stations are finding it increasingly hard to make money -even the most modern combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT) are struggling to turn a profit - as wholesale power prices slump, and gas remains stubbornly expensive.
