Japanese researchers are now poring over data collected from a successful test last month to extract natural gas from methane hydrate formations below the seabed (WGI Feb.13'13). But as specula- tion mounts that methane hydrates could prove as revolutionary to the industry as shale gas, warnings are already being sounded, both about the potential ecological and environmental risks, and the huge costs of commercialization.
