LNG Trade Shrinks In 2012, BP Says

BP says global LNG trade dropped last year for the first time in at least two decades, squeezed by lower output from existing liquefaction plants and the addition of very little new capacity. In its latest statistical review of world energy, the UK energy giant says trade inched down 0.9% year-on-year to 327.9 billion cubic meters, or 242.6 million tons - findings that echo those of the International Group of LNG Importers (GIIGNL), which reckons LNG trade fell for the first time in 30 years in 2012 (WGI Apr.3'13). Indeed, BP says global gas trade was weak overall last year, growing just 0.1%, with LNG's share of the total declining slightly to 31.7%). Pipeline shipments edged up 0.5% to 705.5 Bern, with a 12% decline in Russian exports partly offset by a 12%) increase in Norwegian sales.
