Gazprom has hammered another nail in the Shtokman gas development coffin, canceling a tender to build a 7.5 million ton/yr LNG plant (WGI Jun.5' 13). The Russian gas giant's offshore division, Gazprom Dobycha Shelf, issued the 2.2 billion ruble ($67 million) tender in February, with work to be completed by April 2015. The company declined to say why it canceled, adding it continues to work with French partner Total on possible development options. Norway's Statoil pulled out last year. The Barents Sea license area is estimated to harbor proven gas resources in excess of 3.9 Tcm. But its location, some 600 km offshore, presents considerable technical and financial challenges, with the 10-year first phase alone expected to cost at least $40 billion.
