China has become an economic phenomenon in recent years, with its rapid industrialisation driving the commodity markets and its seemingly insatiable appetite for raw materials making it the world's largest consumer of copper, alumina, zinc, iron ore and metallurgical coal and the world's largest producer of steel. Its progression into the rank's of the world's top five gold producers, usurping Canada as the fourth largest producer, is, however, less heralded. Although this growth has been driven, in the main, by domestic producers, there is now a fully-fledged gold rush underway as foreign companies look set to boost the country's gold output even further.
