Microbiotas and environments of the Nansha Islands and adjacent sea

IN the past 12 years, the Multidisciplinary Oceanographic Expedition Team to Nansha Islands organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences has carried out many investigations and obtained a lot of scientific research results. In the present study, 177 surface sediments and 7 core specimens were used for analyzing foraminifers, ostracods, radiolarians, bryozoans, gastropods, bivalves, diatoms, dinoflagellates, sporopollen and calcareous nannoplankton, concerning nearly all of the microbiota groups (fig.1). Based on studying their taxonomy, relationship between environments and microbiotas of various benthonic and planktonic groups were analyzed, from which some microbiota indexes were obtained for indicating environmental changes. Furthermore, information of paleoenvironmental changes during the late Quaternary was extracted by analyzing micropaleontologic assemblages, their evolution, oxyen isotope and ~(14)C dating.
