Electron theory analysis on formation of spheroidal carbide in vanadium-alloyed white cast iron

THE brittleness of abrasion-resistant plain white cast iron has strongly hindered its wider application so far. In order to solve this problem, many researchers have made strenuous efforts to spheroidize the carbide in white cast iron. By alloying andinoculating the liquid white cast iron with vanadium, Ye found that when the vanadium amount in liquid iron was above a critical value, the carbides containing vanadium in the iron would become smooth and round spheroids, which made the as-cast toughness of such white cast iron enhanced remarkably. And the smooth and round spheroids in the iron were mainly VC. With the help of the empirical electron theory of solids and molecules (E. E. T. ) in refs., this note analyzes the valence electron structure of spheroidized carbides in vanadium-alloyed white iron.
