Influence of using organic fertilizer on vegetative growth, flowering and chemical constituents of Matthiola incana plant grown under saline water irrigation.

A pot experiments were conducted during 2008 and 2009 seasons at National Research Centre, Dokki, Cairo, Egypt, to study the effect of Nile compost (0, 100 and 200 g/pot) rates on the vegetative growth, flowering and chemical constituents of Matthiola incana plants irrigated with three concentrations of saline water (1000, 2000 and 3000 ppm). Results indicated that application of saline water alone led to a significant decrease in all vegetative growth and flowers parameters, while those parameters were significantly increased with increasing Nile compost application rates under irrigation with normal or saline water up to 3000 ppm. Irrigation with saline water decreased the content of chlorophyll a, b, a+b and carotenoids as well as N, P and K concentration, while a pronounced increase was noticed for Na concentration. On the other hand, all of those above mentioned criteria gave the opposite result with Nile compost application. The interaction effects between Nile compost and salinity levels showed a markedly decrease in Na concentration, while chlorophyll a, b, a+b and carotenoids contents were increased. Similar trend was obtained for the uptake of concerned nutrients a previously mentioned for their concentration. It can be concluded that Nile compost application decreased the hazard effect of salinity and had a favourable effect on vegetative growth, flowering and chemical constituents of Matthiola incana plants.
