International Symposium on Economies in Transition Held in Beijing

An international seminar on Economic Restructuring: Comparison between Asian and Eastern European Experiences was held in Beijing during July 5-6. The seminar was co-sponsored by the State Commission for Restructuring the Economy of China and the AsiaFoundation of the United States. More than 30 Chinese and foreign scholars and experts from eight countries attended the meeting. At the meeting the their colleagues from China, Viet Nam, Mongolia, Russia, Czech, Poland and Hungary briefed participantson the successes these countries have made and difficulties they are confronted with in transiting from a planned economy to a market economy. These speakers are all famous experts who have been involved or are being involved in making policy decisions or studying the current economic policies in their respective countries. Among them were, Boris Fedorov, a member of parliament and former minister of Finance of Russia, Marek Dabrowski, director of Social and Economic Center and former deputy minister ofFinance of Poland and Le Dang Doanh, president of the Hanoi Central Economic Management Institute. Other foreign experts included Stephen Parker, chief economist of the Asia Foundation, and Jeffrey Sachs, the leading advocator of 'shock therapy' at Harvard University.
