Chrysler's powertrain program takes one step forward with the model-year '12 rollout of an 8-speed automatic transmission, and half a step back by delaying the introduction of a dual-clutch gearbox. The new 8-speed will debut in the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger fullsize sedans. The auto maker confirms their highway fuel economy ratings will jump as high as 31 mpg (7.6 L/100 km), compared with the 27 mpg (8.7 L/100 km) delivered by '11 cars that featured a 5-speed automatic.
