THE United Farm Workers (UFW) union has faced a slew of problems in recent years. The death of its charismatic founder, internal power struggles, scandals, and eroding effectiveness have seriously shaken the once-powerful organization. But then reports started emerging of a "new" UFW emerging from the rubhle, one that would leave old baggage behind and be more clearly focused on meeting the needs of farm laborers. Unfortunately, as the current drive to unionize California strawberry workers clearly demonstrates, it's still the same old UFW.
