BRANT Harrison of Palisade, CO, is saving energy and effort when he prunes his 15 acres of organically grown peaches, thanks to the following Bright Idea: "Six years ago, I put in a propane orchard heating system to help combat spring frost damage. The propane tanks are up at the packing-shed, and the propane is piped underground throughout the orchard using 1 1/2-inch PVC pipe rated at 200 psi. There are risers with manifolds on top midway in the different orchard blocks from which I run lines on top of the ground to the individual heaters in the spring.
