To grow organic grapes, start with a young vineyard and be ever vigilant. WALT Bentley gets a fair number of questions from organic grape growers on how to control vine mealybug (VMB), a problem pest that first showed up in California in the CoachellaValley in 1994. Unfortunately, the integrated pest management entomologist doesn't have a lot of easy answers."I just talked to an organic grower today who's going to get out of growing them," says Bentley, who works out of the University of California Cooperative Extension's Kearney Agricultural Center. "Especially after the vineyards turn 15 (years old), it gets really tough."
