WHILE there are a number of issues facing fruit growers today, maintaining quality remains at the top of the list, according to Valent BioSciences product manager Steve Slaveck. Slaveck points out two trends that are essentially forcing fruit growers to raise the bar in terms of producing high-quality fruit. The first is the rising dominance of large retail buyers such as Wal-Mart and Costco, who aredemanding uniform quality in size, internal traits, and color. "If you can't come up with a product that meets these demands, with minimal culls, you run the risk of being shut out of their stores," says Slaveck.
