Compost isn't just for backyard growers any more as both organic consumption and pressure to recycle green waste increase. John Beerman has got a problem a lot of business people would like to have: He can't make enough product. Beerman, the vice president for product development of California Bio-Mass is all out of compost. He entered 2000 sold out for the first two months of the year. In 1999, the Coachella Valley facility produced about 80,000 tons of compost -- a whole lot of you-know-what -- but still can't keep up with demand.
