Spanish Bush For Sweet Cherries? This training system results in shorter trees and quicker production for growers in the western U.S.

IT'S too early to name a winner in the continuing California trials, but Spanish Bush, a cherry tree training system, is showing that with modification it can adapt to the climate of the western U.S. Spanish Bush, a nontrellising training system, results in open-centered trees with canopies that may reach only 10 to 12 feet. The trials, undertaken to assess the performance of a modified Spanish Bush system as well as modified Tatura trellis and central leader systems, are being conducted by the University of California (UC)-Davis and are supported by the California Cherry Advisory Board, the International Dwarf Fruit Tree Association, and the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission. This is the fifth year of the project.
