LAST year, for the third time in 10 years, the Swindeman's lost a significant portion of their apple crop to hail. The most recent hailstorm to wreak havoc at Apple-wood Orchards, Inc., Deerfield, MI, wiped out 100 acres—a major loss in anyone's book. When the hail took its toll, the Swindeman's probably shook their heads and may have cursed Mother Nature, but they didn't figure there was anything they could have done to prevent the damage.
