Geneva: world trade organization talks fail at the table

The journey to Geneva is long one. Still longer is the course to a healthy world trade agreement that makes sense for Canada. As talks within the World Trade Organization loomed in July, Canada's dairy, poultry and egg industry leaders viewed Geneva with some trepidation knowing Canada's supply management system might come under global scrutiny. They had grown concerned with the Doha round proposal and negotiations underway in Geneva under the auspices of WTO Director General Pascal Lamy. Although seven years have lapsed without a WTO agreement, Canada as a trading nation, would like to develop new markets for its beef and other export sectors, but not at the expense of supply management systems already firmly established.
