In January 2015, Lancashire County Council planning department issued a report recommending refusing permission for Cuadrilla to hydraulically fracture wells at two sites near Blackpool. The Local Council will take its final decision to grant or refuse the application in April 2015. Similarly, in September 2014 South Downs National Park Authority turned down an application by Celtique Energy to explore for oil and gas to the West of Fernhurst, Sussex. This follows a similar refusal in July 2014 by the West Sussex County Council of Celtique Energy's Wisborough Green exploration application. Application refusals at the Local Council level are illustrative of the barriers likely to be faced by unconventional hydrocarbon explorers in the UK.
