To be successful, an intensive aquaculture facility must avoid failure in all aspects of culture system design, fish husbandry, biosecurity, marketing and business management. There are many places where a cause for failure can be created in the design of an intensive aquaculture system and a single serious failure in the system design can ultimately prevent or limit the success of the commercial venture. This two-part article considers basic aspects of system design that must be addressed to avoid serious failure in the maintenance of good water quality for intensive aquaculture systems. The first article provides design procedures for estimating carrying capacity in culture units that rely on flowing water to overcome carrying capacity limits. The second article describes design procedures that can be used to estimate water quality in indoor recirculating aquaculture systems.
