Aquaculture has traditionally been considered a "green" industry, but more recently its potential negative environmental impacts have been identified. Perhaps the most damaging environmental impact of aquaculture occurs when untreated effluent is discharged into surrounding bodies of water. Effluent is generated from either water exchange to maintain water quality in ponds or for the harvest of a crop. If the effluent is enriched with nutrients, eutrophication within the receiving body of water may result. Although aquaculturists are moving toward systems where the discharge of effluent is minimized, the problem of effluent disposal continues to challenge the industry. Clearly, low cost and effective treatments of aquaculture effluent are needed to ensure the sustainability of the industry.
