New pricing formula for milk freight pooling in B.C. is an issue for some producers

The B.C. Milk Marketing Board will introduce full province-wide milk freight pooling by or at the beginning of the next dairy year, Aug. 1st. The BCMMB was ordered to take the action by the B.C. Farm Industry Review Board (the provincial supervisory board) in a long-awaited decision issued Jan 19. The Superboard decision was the result of two appeals -- one by the Northern Interior Dairymen's Association, filed Dec 5, 2001, and one by the Mainland Dairymen's Association, filed July 8, 2002. The highly contentious issue traces its roots to Oct. 1, 2001, when the BCMMB became the province's first receiver of milk and developed an equalization program for milk transportation.
