The fisheries sector, a sunrise sector in India, has recorded faster growth than those of the crop and livestock sectors (Kumar et al 2006). The sector contributes to the livelihood of a large section of the economically underprivileged population of the country. Recognized as a powerful income and employment generator, it stimulates growth of a number of subsidiary industries and is a source of cheap and nutritious food, besides being a foreign exchange earner (Ayyappan and Krishnan 2004).
