Delightful as they are to eat, shrimp are a wasteful food with 40-50 percent of each creature being inedible. In areas where their consumption is high, such as Mexico and the southern states of the U.S., disposal of the solid waste, consisting of shells, legs and heads, is a serious environmental problem. Much of it ends up in landfills because it degrades slowly.
