摘要

Disease is the single largest challenge to shrimp aquaculture during the last half decade with reports of frequent losses due to disease outbreaks. Many diseases are caused by opportunistic pathogens, such as bacteria, which are responsible for large-scale disease outbreaks and mortality. Antibiotics are often used for the treatment of bacterial diseases and to promote growth of animals in the farming sector. The indiscriminate use of antibiotics in aquaculture could cause development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the problem of persistence of antibiotic residues in flesh. This could lead to toxicity in humans and a transfer of drug resistance to human pathogens, which can make the treatment of human diseases difficult.
