Aquaculture development in Kenya

The Fisheries sub-sector in Kenya has the potential to contribute substantially to the national economy through employment cre-ation, foreign exchange earnings, poverty reduction and food security support, The fisheries resources play an important role in sustaining rural and urban livelihoods in Kenya. Despite this crucial role, the per capita supply of fish has been declining due to an increasing population and demand for fish that cannot be met by the available natural resources. The government is, therefore, taking steps to bridge this gap by facilitating aquaculture development, an area that has not been given much attention in the past, resulting in slow growth. The increase in fishery products through aquaculture will also assist in reducingthe current fishing pressure on the natural resources.
