The World Aquaculture Society's 'Gateway to Aquaculture'

It may seem strange that the web editor is using the WAS magazine to write about the WAS web site (http://www.was.org), but probably no less strange than my being asked to be the web editor in the first place! As most of you are no doubt aware, theweb site has undergone a bit of an overhaul in the past few months with a complete site redesign. Much of the work has been behind the scenes and relates to how the web site content interfaces with our members and other databases, an administrative interface that allows us much greater control over site content and, last but not least, changes to the online store that make it easier to use and with enhanced security features to make online shopping at the store safer than ever before. This article provides a short introduction to some of the features of the web site and some of the plans for its future development. The decision to upgrade the site was made in late 2000 when it was agreed that the site should be developed as a key component of the Society's future networking strategy. The first stage of this strategy was to re-engineer the web site to improve its integration with the WAS databases, simplifying the way in which content can be added and updated. Immediately following the Orlando meetingin 2001, a contract was signed between WAS and George McKee of McKee Associates in Seattle to transfer the existing site content and integrate the WAS databases in the home office. The work was completed in September 2001 and the domain name switched toa new hosting service before the re-designed site came online in October 2001.
