The roads of Northam, 100km east of Perth, will soon be a lot quieter. With the opening of the 40 million dollars Northam Bypass in March, a large proportion of intercontinental traffic will be diverted around the town on its way to and from the Western Australian capital.Contractors are in the process of adding the finishing touches to the 14.9km realignment and reconstruction of Great Eastern Highway, which will relieve Northam of regular road train activity and make for a safer, faster east-west passage for truck drivers. Almost all heavy interstate road transport entering or leaving WA passes through the town's main street and shopping precinct along the existing highway route.
