Civil's second national success in the Case Earth Awards - it was honoured also in 1999 - underlines the medium-sized Western Australian contractor's growing reputation as one of Australia's best in environmental remediation. The company won the state award for the environmental excellence on a project under 2 million dollars in value for its work on the rehabilitation of Sector 17, a former industrial site alongside the Graham Farmer Freeway in East Perth that had to be cleared of significant heavy metal, pesticide and petroleum hydrocarbon contamination to allow for its future commercial development. The project, carried out for the East Perth Redevelopment Authority, involved the removal of contaminated soils that lay several metres deep in places over much of the 26,500-square-metre site and their replacement with clean materials. Faced with the special challenge of removing the contaminants from around two buried power conduits and beneath high voltage aerial cables that cross the site, the company came up with the idea of using vacuum suction trucks to remove the material safely and efficiently.
