Spillway works lift dam safety margin

When it was built over 40 years ago to cope with Perth's booming industrial and population growth, the Serpentine Dam was planned and constructed to be able to cope with a one in 10,000 year flood - then the accepted world standard for large dams.As a result of a 10 million dollars upgrade just completed by Leighton Contractors for Western Australia's Water Corporation, the safety margin at the dam near Jarrahdale, about 55km south-east of Perth, has now been lifted to at least ten times this value.
