After several years of pressure by CVIA on behalf of the industry, the initial trial of self-inspection of vehicles is at last under way in two leading Perth workshops.Any problems that emerge during the three-month trial will be dealt with, after which the Transport Department should begin extending the scheme to other companies that meet the criteria. The scheme, once it is in flail operation, will allow industry members who are accredited as Authorised Heavy Vehicle Modifiers to inspect and approve modifications - such as the fitting of bodies and attachments - to new vehicles. To qualify for the scheme, a company will have to have police clearance, employ a tradesman who has undergone appropriate training and have facilities such as an inspection pit.
