Lightweight panel preparation: Methods for applying edgebanding to honeycomb panels

The use of lightweight materials in the wood products industry is slowly gaining momentum in North America, especially in the furniture manufacturing sector. Built with MDF or particleboard outer layers, these lightweight materials offer significant benefits in terms of reductions in raw material usage, as well as lower manufacturing and transportation costs. In addition, they offer unique features that can open up new market opportunities for manufacturers. Presently, the main obstacles for using lightweight panels in wood products are the lack of knowledge and basic information in their properties, and methods to integrate them into product designs and existing manufacturing operations. The application of edgebanding material to panels, especiallyframeless honeycomb core panels, is one of the major challenges that panel manufacturers and people using the panels to make furniture, cabinets or shelving must address.
