Only three values in the following speed equation define the maximum printing speed V_(max) [mps] that would be achievable at a given drop frequency f_(Dr) [kHz], stroke length SLen [drops] and a set stroke distance SDist [mm]: V_(max)=(f_(Dr)·S_(Dist))/S_(Len) The previous part of this article series, in the November 2014 issue of this magazine, discussed the impact of the stroke distance SDist on the maximum printing speed and the effects it may have on print quality. This time the focus is on the stroke length SLen, which due to the inverse relationship seems to have even bigger impact on Vmax than the stroke distance or the drop frequency. The smaller S_(Len) is, the bigger Vmax becomes and, e.g., halving the stroke length doubles the maximum printing speed. So one is tempted to use an as short as possible stroke length, but to what extent is that possible and applicable?
