Improved UV cure heat-resistant coatings have potential for use as protective overcoatings, as conventional tight buffers and over neutral or colored fibers. Glass optical fibers, cables and sensors have proven advantageous over traditional copper-based data transmission media; and have found many uses in distributed sensing as both sensor and signal transmission link 3. These uses often are in high temperature harsh environments, such as oil wells 4 or under-hood automotive applications 5. Therefore understanding the thermooxidative characteristics of the various UV cure coatings used in these environments has always been important to the industry. Ideally this knowledge leads to the ability for design engineers to adequately estimate the long-term behavior and durability of optical fiber appliances in harsh environments.
