One of the defining characteristics of a mature lens range is the provision of alternative specifications at the same focal length. A quick glance through the vast line-ups offered by Nikon, Canon and Sigma proves this point whereas in fledgling ranges the choice is often only between a prime (fixed-focal-length) version and a zoom that incorporates the same focal length. The Olympus range for the Micro Four Thirds system is not yet up to the breadth of the big three but it already has the aforementioned hallmark of maturity. This wideangle prime with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 sits alongside another Olympus 17mm prime that has a "pancake" design but a more modest f/2.8 maximum aperture. Significantly, as well as having a wider maximum aperture, the new lens is getting on for around twice the investment so needs to excel in order to justify the price.
