The Polo gets a 30th birthday facelift and two! new diesel engines to try to outshine its young rivals? But will it? Victor Harman reports. As from June 10th, the Polo received an updated styling package, a number of specification changes, and two new Euro-IV 70PS and 8oPS 1.4 TDI engines, the arrival of which despatched the old 64bhp 1.9 SDI engine into retirement. New frontal styling aligns the Polo with other recent newcomers to the Volkswagen range, with a bold V-shaped grille and new headlights similar to those on the new Passat. Indicator repeaters have been relocated into the door mirrors, adding a nice upmarket touch, and the rear end has been similarly restyled in line with recent Volkswagen trends. You'll probably like its new face. Of the two new diesel engines, unfortunately only the 8oPS (79bhp) version came our way, so we refreshed our memories of the TDI 100 engine in the nippier Sport model.
