The next BMW 1 Series promises to outstretch the old model by 24 per cent between the pumps, with a 1.8-litre diesel topping the bill. Here's a measure of what's coming... Buying a hatchback BM used to be the preserve of impoverished badge snobs desperate to cling onto a chic brand's bottom rung. But the 1 Series put pay to that argument: a car crafted as a proper stand-alone product, not a 3 Series with a sawn-off rump. It carried a suitably expensive price tag to reinforce the point: this is premium hatchback territory, the car being specifically designed to allow BMW dealers the chance to stretch down and scoop up VW Golf customers.
