Citroen's C4 is a major step forward and a far sweeter smelling flower than the old Xsara. Maurice Glover makes the trip to France to have a sniff around. It's back to the future as Citroen sweeps away its dowdy-looking Xsara and introduces a natty new line-up of family hatchback and coupe models to take on Ford's Focus and the Vauxhall Astra. But as well as returning to its roots with avant-garde styling, the ambitious French firm is aiming to get up close and personal with the people it hopes will buy its radical new C4. In a trendy departure from the conservative norm in the lower-medium sector, Citroen bosses commissioned a variety of air freshener fragrances to match the moods of their customers. Supplied by Robertet, the specialist perfume designer, kits containing three fragrances - vanilla, mint and musk and yang and bamboo - will be delivered to buyers of most versions of the svelte three and five-door cars.
