IF HITTING THE treadmill once a week to stay trim seems hard work, just think of the lengths to which Mazda's engineers went to give their new 6 the slimline treatment. Their efforts have paid off, though. The clever weight-saving measures they've used in building their new family car have resulted in a vehicle that's significantly longer, taller and wider than its predecessor - but is only a fraction heavier. This brings benefits by the bucketload. There's the sharp handling, for example. The 6 feels impressively light and nimble for a big car. It switches direction cleanly, body roll is minimal and there's lots of grip. It's just a shame the steering is rather short of feedback.
