THE V70 IS the archetypal Volvo estate - it's big, comfy and safe. However, a BMW 5 Series Touring or Audi A6 Avant have always made a lot more financial sense - at least, until now. Volvo has thrown a smaller diesel engine into the mix, and that makes passing up the V70 rather less straightforward. You see, Volvo's larger diesel engines are ageing fast: they drink a lot, and they make a fuss when asked to get a move on. The new 2.0-litre diesel unit might not be quite as brawny, but it's a lot more civilised, and cheaper to run.
