Golf 1.4 TSI blows away 1.6 - A new turbocharged 1.4 Golf eclipses the outgoing 1.6

HEARD OF A turbocharger? Prepare to hear it mentioned a lot more in the future: it's a little mechanical device that sits in a car's exhaust system and uses spent energy to force more air into the engine. More air equals more power. Good, right? It gets better. If it is added to a smaller engine, it can also produce lower emissions than a non-turbo larger unit. That's exactly what VW has done. Out goes the 1.6-litre FSI petrol engine, to be replaced by a 1.4-litre TSI turbocharged powerplant. Power and pull are up (113bhp to 120bhp, and 1141b ft to a healthy 1481b ft) which, in the Golf tested here, cuts the o-62mph time from 10.8 seconds to just 9.4.
