Ongoing trade issues with Russia and the current Brexit debate are two of the current key issues likely to determine the fortunes of pig producers, according to ForFarmers marketing director Andrew Knowles.While some hope that a thawing of relationships and access to the Russian market could provide a boost to EU pig prices, the country has been busy expanding its own domestic herd by a reported 500,000 sows in 2015, which has increased domestic pig meat production by 8%. Russia has also strengthened trade relationships with non-EU exporters such as Brazil, which increased exports to the country by 75% in January and February 2016 compared with 12 months earlier.
