Producing pigs in Hawaii is a specialist business and the escalating cost of shipping feed from the mainland is a big worry... but by selling direct to customers these producers are keeping in profit. Think of Hawaii and what springs to mind - idyllic beaches, palm trees, crystal clear seas? Pig farms have to be some way down the list but they are there, tucked away. Eighty-five percent of Hawaii's pork is imported so production is pretty limited - around 5,000 sows.
