New York Governor Paterson vetoes drilling moratorium,but bans horizontal hydraulic fracturing

A debate is heating up in New York and it's all about hydraulic fracturing and the potential consequences of a ban on fracing.In late November 2010, a majority in the State Assembly voted against approving new hydraulic fracturing permits. Gov. David Paterson vetoed a bill on Saturday December 11, that would have halted new natural gas drilling permits until May 15, 2011. But in a surprise move to many closely following the issue, Governor Paterson issued an executive order prohibiting hydraulic fracturing of horizontally drilled wells in the Marcellus Shale areas of southern New York. The order stands for seven months, until July 1.
