In their review and meta-analysis, Valkanova and Ebmeier (pages 406-413) identified 26 relevant studies describing the relationship of vascular disease and depression in late life. They report that vascular risk factors account for only part of the overall risk for depression. They conclude that consideration of cardiovascular health appears important for the assessment and management of depression in late life, but that additional data from longitudinal epidemiological studies combined with neu-roimaging would aid our understanding of late-life depression.
