Damage and failures of cranes have increased significantly in different countries of the world during the second part of the twentieth century. This has occurred in spite of improved construction procedures and the high quality of materials used. The result has been a grave increase in the number of harmful social and economic consequences. A variety of non-destructive test methods has been used in different countries to prevent catastrophic failures and extend the service life of cranes. Nevertheless, traditional nondestructive inspection (NDI) methods are lacking in several key areas. They cannot: 1. reveal flaws at early stages; 2. evaluate the kinetics of flaw development in limited time intervals. 3. provide reliable information when operational conditions lead to a change in material properties.
