Pigs galore in UK - and CSF keeps the prices high

There was an abundance of pigs in the UK in the first quarter of '97. Clean pig slaughterings were up nearly 11 per cent to 3,719 million on a year earlier - far above the original forecast. Sow productivity remained high and throughputs were boostedby the number of producers who held pigs over from December hoping prices would improve. In February alone slaughterings were up 14 per cent, and slaughter weights were averaging close to 70 kg. It meant a rise in pork production of 17 per cent to 215,400 tonnes. Bacon production was six per cent lower; at 58,200 tonnes.
