Ultrasound-guided venous access with a single lumen catheter into the internal jugular vein.

The use of ultrasound for venous access has tremendously decreased the need for central line placement, eliminating the inherent risks associated with this invasive procedure. Ultrasonography for placement of central lines in the internal jugular vein has previously been documented. However, this procedure still requires sterile technique and often the assistance of a second operator. Over the past 3 years, I have placed numerous 48-mm 18-gauge single-lumen angiocatheters with ultrasound guidance in the internal jugular vein for patients in whom I could not locate suitable extremity or external jugular veins. I have found this technique safe and efficient.
