TEMPORAL AND SPATIAL VARIATION IN THE DISTRIBUTION AND ABUNDANCE OF THE MAGPIE GOOSE, ANSERANAS SEMIPALMATA, IN THE ROCKHAMPTON REGION OF THE QUEENSLAND COAST

The distribution, abundance and habitat of the magpie goose, Anseranas semipalmata, were studied from February 1987 to March 1990 and examined in relation to season, rainfall and evaporation, and the availability of sedges (Eleocharis spp.) in the Rockhampton area on the central Queensland coast. Seasonal fluctuations in abundance of the magpie goose were correlated with the 12-month cumulative difference between rainfall and evaporation in Rockhampton. Large flocks (>500 magpie geese) were observed on Eleocharis spp. and open water during the wet season, and on mud during the dry season. [References: 17]
